How did Kirkland, Illinois get its name?
The original settlement began shortly after 1835 and was actually just west of present day Kirkland along the south branch
of the Kiswaukee River. It was was called Hicks or Hicks Mills. The first Post Office of the area was there. Later around the
1865 it became known that the railroad was to come through, an area of farmland was purchased from James Greenhow by
partners William T Kirk and and a Mr Byers and the village was platted. The railroad came finally came through about 1875.
At first the village was known as Kirkwood but because of government red tape having to do with another town with the
same name it was changed to Kirkland. The Village of Kirkland Illinois officially came in to being in August of 1882. Ironically,
today small a sub-division on the west edge of town is named Kirkwood.
