Fall Sports Alert: What Parents, Players and Coaches Need to Know
Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation offers injury prevention guidelines
WEST ORANGE, N.J., Aug. 15, 2012 -- As the fall season approaches, millions of student-athletes are preparing
to take to the playing fields - and with that comes an increased risk of sports-related injuries. According to the
Centers for Disease Control (CDC), more than seven million students participate in high school sports annually
and millions more are active on the elementary and middle school levels as well as in recreation leagues. High
school athletes alone account for an estimated two million injuries, 500,000 doctor visits, and 30,000
hospitalizations with the highest injury rate among football players, followed by wrestlers and soccer players.
In addition, more than 3.5 million children ages 14 years and younger receive medical treatment for
sports-related injuries.

How to Stay Cool as Summer Heats up?
Kessler Institute offers outdoor safety tips
WEST ORANGE, N.J., July 18, 2012 -- With summer in full swing, children and adults are spending more time
outdoors - and with that comes the risk for more accidents, injuries and heat-related complications.
"Swimming, biking, and other summer sports are all great activities that offer exercise and other health
benefits," said Dr. Karen Kepler of Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation (www.kessler-rehab.com). "But studies
show that the potential for sprains, strains and broken bones, as well as more serious brain and spinal cord
injuries, increases during the summer months. Many of these injuries can be attributed to the simple fact that
more people are outdoors doing more things: whether it's travelling to the beach, lake or pool; going boating; pursuing more extreme hiking and
mountain biking; or just playing at the local playground. And what can make matters worse are the high temperatures and humidity levels that can result
in heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses."

How to Take the Pain Out of Spring Cleaning
Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation offers tips to get the job done without injury
WEST ORANGE, N.J., May 8, 2012 -- It's that time of year when many people feel compelled to clean their
closets, houses or garages and get rid of the piles of "stuff" that accumulated over the winter months. What
most people don't realize is that these chores can be extremely hard on their muscles and bones and can
lead to aches, pains and injury.
In fact, of the millions of home-related injuries that occur each year, many result from household cleaning.
