My grandmother Rose (Vanoni) Tavernetti was born in Freedom CA in 1887. One 4th of July in the latter part of the nineteenth century some tents were set up on a hillside to sell whiskey for the celebration. Over the top of the tents was a large sign with the word "FREEDOM". According to family lore, the Vanoni family often went from the family farm in Tres Pinos to that area and stayed with relatives where Rose was born. Locals referred to the site as Freedom as a small town grew there. I have a picture of one of her cousins known as Mute Vanoni to all in the Watsonville band in 1875.
