My grandparents Frank and Anna Novotny along with my dad Frank moved to Maple Hts. in about 1924. Both grandparents were from Czechoslovakia and had been living on Cleveland's east side on Ferris Ave. They built a home and business at 5180 - 5184 Warrensville Ctr. Rd. Maple Hts. Supply Co. produced among other things, concrete block. The business failed in the depression and my grandfather worked the war years at Jack & Heinz on Broadway. He passed in 1945. Dad eventually joined the police force in 1941. The unoccupied business building became Maple Hts. Beverage in 1947 and was run by my dad and my mother Bertha C. Novotny. A few years later my dad's uncle Charles H. Krause took over the business and ran it until his death in 1966, at which time my mother and I worked it until 1971. I worked in the business from 1957 until it closed. The property was sold to Cleveland Federal Savings and, with the exception of a large, 4 car block garage, the structures were demolished. Dad passed in 1964 as did his mother Anna. Mom died in 1985.
